BMW X5 M and X6 M microsite
The X5 M is also expected to be revealed at the same time, though there's been no confirmation yetWe bet there are still thousands of BMW M fans out there reeling from the fact that the performance division is planning to launch its first ever SUV model, and a turbocharged one at that. Those fans better get used to it fast as BMW has announced it will be unveiling the X6 M at the New York Auto Show.

Early last month BMW launched a new microsite for the M-prepped SUVs, dropping hints as to their final configuration and revealing that they will be unveiled in early April. In just a few days we will get our first chance to see what performance modifications BMW’s M engineers have applied to the X5 and X6 SUVs and finally determine whether these two behemoths are worthy of wearing the storied M badge. Oddly, however, there's been no official confirmation of the X5 M's debut.

The microsite, which you view by clicking here, contains plenty of information about the upcoming vehicles, including images of actual prototypes and a couple of videos from behind the wheel. The X5 M and X6 M models are expected to feature an uprated version of BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine. According to previous reports, output could be as high as 507hp (373kW) and 516lb-ft (700Nm) of torque – enough for 0-60mph times of less than five seconds and more than enough to reach the company’s usual 155mph electronically governed top speed, though hints in the page's source code indicate output could be up to 550hp (410kW).

Prototypes for both the X5 M and X6 M have been spotted by our photographers on several occasions in the past couple of months. Click here for our previous story, which includes comments from the boss of BMW’s M division, Ludwig Willisch.
